Roman Shade Part 3

So here's the LAST part in the tutorial.  I know....long.

1.  Cut your pine 1 x 2 board {lath} to the width of  your finished shade minus 1/4".
2.  Cut a square scrap of fabric to cover the ends of the lath.  Wrap it like you would a present and staple.
3.  Grab your stud finder and measure out where your lath is going to be mounted on your window frame.
4.  Take those measurements to your lath and pre-drill where your screws will go.

5.  Do the same thing for your screw eyes.  Your screw eyes will align directly above your ring rows with an extra on the end to guide the cording.  Most shades are made with the cord on the right side.  If you want it to pull from the left, just make sure you run the cord opposite of my drawing, with the extra screw eye on the opposite side as well.
6.  Now to attach the lath to your shade.  Measure from the bottom of your shade the exact height you need your shade to be, then draw a line across the lining side {I measured 60" from the bottom}.This is your dropline.

 7.  Lay the top edge of your lath right on the dropline, then carefully roll it away once.
8. Staple along the bottom edge and cut the excess.
9.  Tightly roll the lath towards your dropline.
10.  Insert the screw eyes.
11.  Now to cord your shade.  Tie a length of cord to the ring in the bottom right-hand corner.  Thread it up through the row of rings and the screw eye at the the top and then along the top through the remaining screw eyes.  Thread the other rings the same way.  All the cording should meet up on the left side if you want your shade to pull from the right.  {You shouldn't be able to see your lath at this point...I messed up}

12.  Thread your cord ends through  the drop weight.

13.  You're finished and ready to install!!!

14.  Screw the cleat into your wall.

You're done!!!  If you're anything like me, you'll test it over and over and over again - just to make sure it really works :)

The tutorial is finished!!!  Tomorrow, I'll go over the cost breakdown and answer a few questions.
Thanks for sticking with me!

  1. Wow! You really make it look easy. I think I want to make some shades of my own.

  5. I love your tutorial; so easy to understand and the result looks great! I'm making shades for the first time and debating use of tube tape/pre-made rod pockets vs. sewn pleats and rings in my shades. I noticed you don't recommend the pre-made option; why is that?
