duncan fyfe antique table

I've actually had this antique drop leaf table for over a year.  I bought it to refinish and slowly buried it in sandpaper, rags and loose hardware.  It has served me well as my collect all table - it will be missed.
This before photo doesn't do it justice…it was in terrible condition.
I love the brass toe caps.
The table is fully functional though the sides droop slightly when lifted.
I see it working great accessorized as an end table or between two tall chairs.

Details in the shop.

  1. the the gold/brass accent on the toes!! Very random question: do you have to thin your gloss paint before using it in your sprayer? I thin mine but a lot of the time it looses the gloss finish!

    1. I don't thin my paint, but if you don't have a large enough tip on your sprayer, there's no way to get around it. What type of paint are you using? Also, I'm assuming a spray gun if you're thinning your paint - what size is the tip? And what are your pressure settings?

  4. This is beautiful - how did you get the brass so shiny? I have my grandmother's old DP dining table and the caps are nearly brown!

    1. Have you tried tarnish remover? This table was so old the tarnish remover only exposed a chipped brass coating, so I used some liquid leafing. I'm working on a post for next week about it.

    2. I'll have to pick some up today and try it. Thanks!

Did you use oil-based paint or latex? I'm worried about yellowing with oil-based (will be painting mine an off white)

    3. I use a waterborne oil or a waterborne lacquer. The oil will yellow over time, but not for quite a while - especially if it's not in a dark place like a closet. Also, if you're using an off white, I wouldn't be really concerned about it.

  5. Nat, I was wondering about the you're caps, as well. I'm actually wondering because the hanging hardware for our kitchen cabinets looks really bad but they're super expensive so I'm hoping to be able to clean them up. Any suggestions?

  12. This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It is the old what goes around comes around routine.
