A vintage sofa.

For months, I've been scouring craigslist for a vintage sofa to go in my living room.  One day last week, I stumbled upon these and had to have them!
They were delivered last night and I love them.  They are quite short, as most mid-century sofas are.  So we need to get creative and either add casters or new legs all together because the ceiling in that room is 22 feet high.
The love seat is going up to my bedroom and will probably sit at the foot of the bed.

I haven't attempted an upholstery project this large…ever.  Or even half this large…ever.
It seems overly daunting at the moment, so I guess it's a good thing they have to wait for at least a month while I crank out several client projects.

So…what do you think?

  9. I have done reupholstery and I'm here to say it's not difficult at all. You've chosen easy pieces too. My advice? Pictures, pictures, pictures! And when you remove pieces from the couch, number each one, write down where it came from on the sofa and use the old pieces as your patterns for the new fabric. It's not difficult, I promise.

  12. What a great find!! You can totally tackle this! I reupholstered an old settee I scored at an antique store. It was easier than I thought it would be. http://thelittleblackdoor.blogspot.com/2012/04/now-you-really-can-take-seat.html
(And I'm getting casters for mine too - its a little too short)

I still have never taken on an upholstery project and I think I would be a ball of nerves just doing a small piece of furniture! Ha!
I can't wait to see what you decide to do with them, I know you will wow us all, as usual! :)

  19. Hi Natty!
I bought a vintage sofa years ago and had the same problem because it was SO short! I have an amazing upholsterer that took the main frame off the legs and inserted a 5" piece of wood to raise the whole sofa up. I ended up slipcovering the sofa, so that piece doesn't show. I love it so much better than I did when it was so low to the ground. You're welcome to come by and see it if you need to get a better idea of what I'm talking about. It was a great solution for me!

  20. I have a vintage sofa ( also very short) in a room with ceilings like yours...I think if you find a great rug to ground the room...possibly a darker color, and maybe choose a bold color for the upholstery it will help bring your eyes down...I have a large display or rather old, ornate frames hanging in a collage behind the sofa. I don't know if that is helpful...but I love love love your sofa and loves eat...they are going to look amazing!

  21. Have you thought about painting the fabric? See here for examples: http://www.hypheninteriors.com/chairs

  22. There are so many places to buy a sofa that you shouldn't have any problems picking up a bargain. We all love a bargain and one of my favorite furniture tricks is to go on to the Internet and search for that model.

  23. I just reupholstered a soda very similar and it was not that difficult because this type sofa has no fold over seams. I stapled the fabric on the back - arms etc and covered with double welt that I made. Your sofa is the same way - double welt glued & stapled on. I took the pieces off and took them apart to use as patterns. It was fun.
