before and after :: campaign dresser

Remember that lot of vintage goodness I picked up awhile ago?
The campaign dresser was first to go.

One of my favorite things about this job is meeting new people.  The woman who purchased this piece has been wanting a campaign style dresser for her boys' room for a long time now.  To save on shipping costs to California, her family stopped by on their drive home from New Mexico (I think).  It was so good to meet her family and see how excited she was with the finished product.  They stopped it to use the restroom and we had a good chat while our husbands loaded up the dresser.

She wanted it a navy blue for her boys' room and I really like Benjamin Moore's Old Navy (same as this bed) - it's not too bright, but not too dull either.
And I love the woodgrain peeping through the paint!  That doesn't happen very often.

The before...

And the after…

I finished it up over Christmas break with all the kiddos home, so there wasn't much time for photo gussying.  It was a "hurry! gotta take pictures before they get here" kind of thing.

There are a couple more pieces available for purchase and customization...

  10. Hi Natty, I am a big fan of the color Old Navy by Benjamin Moore. I have seen it used on many pieces and it looks great. You are the master, though! I just loved it in matte on the vintage bed set and I love it here on the campaign dresser. Would you mind answering a couple of quick questions? Did you use a matte sheen on the dresser? I can't tell from the pictures but I love the glow that it gives off. Which leads to the next question...did you use a topcoat? Finally, thank-you for your patience...did you spray or paint it on? Oops, I lied, one more question. What brand of paint by Ben Moore did you use...specifically, did you use an oil based paint as I know you often do...thank-you! You are my mentor...ha, ha, even though I think I'm about 30 years older than you. All my best and thanks again!

    2. The paint I typically use doesn't require a top coat. It's a top coat in and of itself. I really like BM Satin Impervo (if you're using a brush, it can't be beat for self leveling) or their Advance line (not as durable and dries slower, but doesn't require solvents for clean up). Waterborne lacquers are my favorite right now, but they can't be brushed. If you're using a latex paint, it's going to need one. I spray all my pieces. If you search "spray gun" you should find a few posts on it.
      Hope this helps!

  14. I heard about BM's Old Navy from Emily Henderson, and was considering using it either in my powder room, or on a piece of furniture, or both! It looks great on the campaign dresser. Although who doesn't love a campaign dresser in any color??!!

  16. Natalie! I've been meaning to visit your blog and let you know how much I love the dresser, so I'm really excited to see this post! We got it home and into the boys room and it looks awesome and I LOVE it so much. Even my husband who was totally skeptical about the whole idea, has commented several times about what a great job you did and how fantastic it looks. Thank you so much for a piece I will treasure forever! And it was likewise, so nice to meet you and your beautiful family!

  18. Did you prime this before you painted? I have a lane campaign cabinet and am debating whether or not to prime it before I paint.

    1. I always prime with a good oil based gripper primer, but before I sold pieces and just did them for myself, I hardly ever primed and as long as the surface was sanded well, everything held up just as well.
