Men Against Paint and Kitchen Inspiration

What is it with men and paint?  Why are they so against it?  Ask your husband, ask your dad, brother or boyfriend whether they'd prefer stain over paint and their response is almost always in the affirmative.  I've had this discussion with countless clients who want to have something painted, but can't get their husband onboard.  Is this sounding familiar to anyone?

When it comes to our kitchen cabinets, we're in the same boat.  I've been ogling white kitchens on Pinterest in hopes that one day I will convince my husband that our cabinets need to be painted (make them white like these, please).  And that we need to add glass inserts to our cabinet doors as well.

  1. This is so timely--I just had this conversation with my husband last week! Our kitchen does not get a lot of light from windows and it is so dark. I asked my husband what he thought about me painting the cabinets white. His response was, gee we have some really nice oak cabinets. What's a woman to do? I don't like every surface painted; I like a mix of wood and paint. White cabinets would lighten up kitchen so much. I'm pinning white kitchens on Pinterest to show how beautiful white can be. Sigh...

  2. Ha! Funny, I just had this conversation with someone yesterday. We decided their was something about men and wood. Anywho, beautiful inspiration photos. Since men are visual, I think it's great that you put this post together. We can resort to this the next time an argument ensues. Regards, Sarah

  3. Girls, girls, girls. When you are my age, you learn to paint what you want; forgiveness, not permission is my mantra.

  4. I'm painting mine right now for the THIRD time! This time, the uppers are going white and the bottoms gray!

Can't wait to see how I like it:)

  5. We just had our kitchen cabinets built and installed recently and I had them painted (white uppers, blue-black lowers), they sprayed them with a catalyzed lacquer for a matte finish that's durable. It might be a product you like (my hubby paints cars for a hobby and uses a gun and loved working with this type of paint).

  6. It seems we are living a very similar life! I want to do the same thing with our kitchen and do the glass inserts. My husband is on board with that, however not so much when it comes to painting the judges paneling in our living room.

  7. It's SO TRUE! Who knew it was so universal? I asked if he would mind me painting the headboard or our dining set-- definitely not on board for that. When we were looking at cabinets on a trip to Home Depot and I said I liked the white cabinets, he was all, "but what about the WOOD!?". Sheesh!

  9. I wanted to paint our cabinets ever since we moved in, and could not convince Darin until 3 and a half years later. He loves them now. It will happen, just wait and see. :) Keep showing him pictures and tell him you will do most of the work. That's how I convinced him. :)

  10. I agree with Sarah above- men are just so visual. I usually do a mock up or complete a little area to show him how it will be (along with some firm reminders that he needs to trust my instinct :). Love the inspiration photos!

  11. Agree to the wood and let him start sanding them down. To keep the wood requires far more sanding than to paint them. My husband was suggesting the white paint after the third cabinet DOOR! I love the paint, by the way, and so does he! I didn't do it on purpose, but it sure worked out for me. I wanted it white all along, but was trying to compromise. :)

  12. Oh ya...my cabinets will get painted white within the next year or so ...it's been on my list ofr years and now I am saving specifically for that. In fact...would you do cabinets? I had someone give me a bid that was pretty good, but I didn't even think about that I could probably hire you! Anyway...that striped upholstered bench is fabulous at the bar in one of your pics.

  13. What is so funny is that in Southern California, where I am from, white cabinets are usually standard when you buy a new house. So there are tons of white cabinets there, and it's now all the rage. That is one thing I loved about our home there. One more reason to move out of the Arizona heat!

  14. So funny that you wrote this. My husband prefers stained wood to painted all the time. I LOVE painted wood though.

Luckily the house we purchased had all white trim. It's too much work to strip it. If we had purchased a house with old original wood, then we probably wouldn't paint it.

  15. I think men are attached to the natural wood. And sometimes, yes, it is a sin to paint over nice wood. But...us women get a picture in our mind of how we want something to look, and we just can't get over it. I would love to paint our cabinets too. I like the glass too but I like being able to hide my dishes behind cupboards more, especially with the less-attractive kids dishes that are all sorts of colors. ~Marily

  16. When I showed my husband a really well-done diy painted kitchen a few months back, his response was that it wasn't what you'd see in a high end house. I said, perfect, our house isn't that high-end...which, of course, he wasn't happy to hear either. But he definitely feels wood is too sacred to paint or something.

  17. i always wanted to paint those gross cabinets in our riverdale house. jason said no way. he totally thinks you shouldn't paint wood and he also thinks all the wood should match in the house. but when we buy a house i'm just not going to do much asking. i'm finally feeling like i'm coming into my own when it comes to design and am going to do what i need to do to make the space mine. :)

Iam having mine painted professionally in February while we are on vacation, It will be a surprise to my husband. However he does not cook, clean or grocery shop so I dont feel like he has any reason to object. I did not have a say in his basement "man town"!!
