striped duvet discussion

Plans to paint and decorate Colby's room are finally underway.  He's been patiently waiting for me to get to his room for almost two years!

I've drawn up the basic sketch (I'm talking basic - no snickering!) and no those aren't sharks hanging in the corner - they're airplanes.

This room decorated by Tiffany was my main jumping off point.
I love the versatility and price point of the striped West Elm duvet cover she used, but it seems a hair overused at the moment.
I've read discussions on this topic before.  With so much idea sharing on the internet, certain ideas or pieces become quickly "overused".  Generally they're overused because they're great, so I'm debating: find something original, or use something that might quickly get old.
I'm curious what you're thoughts are on the subject?

I also drew up different ideas for Colby's dresser.  I have a favorite and he has a different favorite, so we're going to work on meeting in the middle. :)

  1. I think if you like it (and Colby likes it) then go for the stripe. It doesn't really matter if it's overused everywhere else as long as you'll like it for the long haul. Or you could always go with a solid and possibly get a striped throw for the end of his bed?

  2. I think it's cute! Stripes are so in right now they are hard to avoid. I always think you should do what you like regardless of popularity. If you love it than I say go for it. I considered this duvet for my oldest boys room makeover that I am just starting but found something else. My fear is that the light colors will get dirty quickly. At least it would with my boy. :) Good luck!

  3. This duvet is clearly a modern take on a VERY classic pattern. I think it is pretty safe. If you want to make it more unique you could embellish the duvet in some way.

  4. I can't wait to see how the room turns out! I personally love stripes and it's a fun way to add pattern to a boys room!

  5. Love the dresser ideas! I am sure it will turn out perfect - your stuff always does. As far as stripes go I am a big fan - Sawyer has them on his big kid bed. I think stripes are classic and not really a trendy idea. Go for it!!!

  6. Lucky Colby! I love the striped comforters. That is what I am looking at possibly doing in my boys room too. I love the black with red strip dresser! So cute Natalie!

  7. I made some striped comforters by buying a white twin sheet and a color twin sheet from walmart. I cut them in strips and sewed them together. So you can get the look for a way cheaper price. So if the style is "overdone" you don't have the price commitment, just the price of the sheets and batting. It was about $20 by the time I was done.

  8. It's going to be such a cute room! I, for one, love the striped duvets (they've been on my list forever!). On trends that are also classic, I tend to just go with what makes me happy - even if I'm following the herd! So I think you should go for it if, they're what you and Colby like.

Your sketches are so cute - the dresser ideas are fun! Can't wait to see what you decide on.

  9. Sketches are cute. I had a bunkbed when I was little. I think they're essential to a true childhood experience. Ha! I also think that if you like the stripes-do the stripes. Simple as that:)

  10. I totally get what you mean about it being overused. I bought it for my daughter last summer, and have loved/hated seeing it everywhere. With that said, I get why too. We have LOVED it. Did you know that Target now has the exact same one? I saw it there last week and it's soooo much cheaper. Literally identical. That might make it worth it even more:)

  11. Your son doesn't know if it's overused! But, if you want even less commitment Target has one in the $20 - $30 price range that I just bought for my boy.

  12. Lol...I have this conversation (with myself) a lot! And I always try and remind myself even though certain trends are HUGE and ridiculously overused seemingly on the online world, there's literally thousands of people in my city and surrounding area that haven't even heard of any of the blogs I follow and have no idea such trends exist. :) In fact, I've never even seen a "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster in real life! Ha ha. So not a trend around here, but I still can't bring myself to frame one because I've seen it so much and feel like it's overused! Maybe that thought will make it easier to just go with the other "trends" though. :o)
