spool beds - masculine or feminine?

Remember when I asked your color advice a few weeks ago - lilac, magenta or violet for the Jenny Lind bed I'm refinishing?
You were all so great to give me your opinions there and now I have another question.
I have always seen spool style frames as feminine, but then the other day, I was perusing the internet for addition inspiration and I came across many in boys' rooms .
It's neither here nor there at this point, I sold it to a woman for her son's room.
But just out of curiosity, what's your opinion - masculine, feminine, or a draw?

A little tid-bit: Jenny Lind is actually a style of furniture, not a particular maker.  This type of furniture is considered anything with a repeating ball pattern.  It can be referred to by many names - spool furniture, spindle style furniture or turned wood.
While Jenny Lind furniture has gained popularity recently, it's a very traditional style that dates back to the late 18th century.

In the photo above, even thought the crib and twin are different, they can both be referred to as Jenny Lind style, spool or spindle style or turned wood.

  2. I think they could go either way depending on the color and what else you have in the space with it.

  4. I have twin boys & we used Jinny Lind cribs and they now have single spool beds. I think they can go either way. We love them!!

  5. Love the beds you are showing here! I think they can definitely be masculine, if styled the right way. The last photo in particular didn't read feminine to me at all.

  6. I love that hot pink one! I actually have a matching set of twin beds painted in a bright red/orange for a shared room for my son and daughter, so I would say they could go either way. Pretty neutral IMHO, unless they're painted white, then definitely girly.

  7. I was thinking a stunning Navy would make it masculine...and there it was. Looks just as good as I imagined too.

  8. I have matching twin Jenny Lind beds that I bought off craigslist for my boys (7 and 4). I think they are neutral and can be more masculine or feminine depending on what you style them with.

  9. I have always thought of them as very classic. Both of my boys had a Jenny Lind crib that I painted navy.

  10. I still think I like them best for girls. Maybe it is because I was SO hoping to do them in my girls room, but I ended up going with fabric headboards instead just because it was a cheaper route. I do LOVE the Jenny Lind beds though, so cute!!

  11. I think they are traditionally associated with girls room, but can definitely go either way, i think! I found a set of matching vintage jenny lind beds of craigslist recently, and they will be going in my boys' room! Im planning a mini-makeover soon. I will probably leave the beds wood (i think it helps them look more masculine).

  13. I have 6 month old twins - one boy and one girl - and when they get out of their cribs, I am for sure looking for these beds for their room. I think that they can go either way.

  14. I think these designs capture a bit of both masculine and feminine. Colors make such a difference but all the designs in appropriate male or female colors will look brilliant

  17. I think the Jenny Lind design is totally neutral. I'm currently designing our nursery for our first baby (a boy) with the Jenny Lind crib. As you mentioned, the Jenny Lind style dates way back which is what I think makes it so easy to see in both girl and boy styles....it's just a classic.
