DIY Circle Garland

A few weeks ago, I started Saturday sewing lessons with my older girls (ages 8 & 5).  Sewing on paper is the perfect place for beginners to start, so this garland turned out to be the great project for them.  Madeline made this one all on her own!

She and Isabelle got busy cutting circles with a 2" punch, then took them over to the sewing machine and strung them together.

They ended up making several - we even have one for our Christmas tree waiting and ready to go.

I was amazed how well Isabelle did.  I thought I'd have to sit down with her to help feed them through and push the pedal, but she was a sewing champ and did it all on her own!  I actually came downstairs one day to her sitting at the sewing machine stringing together a bunch of freshly cut circles.  Then we had to have a little "my sewing machine is not a toy" talk.

The garland she made has been strung across our slider ever since!

These garlands are such an easy, inexpensive project - I'm thinking we'll be making them for every holiday.  Especially since I don't have to make them.  :)

  9. I wish you could give ME sewing lessons! This 50-year old would love to learn. I recently asked my mom to show me, but I'm not sure she is into it. I never thought of learning on paper. Good idea!

  10. That is so sweet that you are teaching your girls to sew. I think it is really a skill we all can use at some time or another. I am trying myself to get back into it. I haven't sewn in many years. Cute photos of your girls and they made beautiful garlands. So fun and colorful!

  12. Hi, Natalie, This is Donna Thomas from Corona. I was invited to your blog by Laurie Bensen. I had written her looking for a forwarding address for your mom. I sent your Mother a birthday card and it was returned to me. I would like to be able to get in touch with her again. If you could send me her new address at donnamdt@gmail.com I would appreciate it.

I enjoyed looking at your blog, my granddaughters would love the circle garlands!

  13. Have just spent the past hour going through back posts and I'm hooked! Just signed up to follow you on Pinterest and my Google Reader. Love your furniture style and the way you stage it all. Really gorgeous. What lens do you use when photographing your pieces? I'm still navigating the ins and outs of furniture and interiors photography.

  14. So smart! I have wanted to sew paper garland several times but never wanted to make the effort. I'll get my kids on it.

I remember learning to sew on paper, too. This is a perfect beginners project.
